Definition: Internet of Things (IoT)
Expect to see many articles on IoT security over the upcoming weeks / months. This is an issue that very much affects family / home / personal online security.
What is the Internet of Things (IoT)? It’s the inter-networking of physical devices – such as vehicles, buildings, and devices – using electronics, software, sensors, actuators. These devices are able to connect to the internet and feed back information to collectors. The collectors use this data for a whole bunch of reasons.
When done right, the IoT brings tremendous benefit. The IoT has already begun revolutionizing industries like mining and energy. And, there are a lot of legitimately cool and useful features that make modern living fun and exciting.
When done wrong, IoT opens us up to shoddy or no security, may drive spyware apps, and can act as a hole in an otherwise secure network.
As mentioned, we’ll be covering this in more depth during upcoming articles. For now, just ask yourself if you really need that internet-connected toaster.
Stay safe out there
