Definition of the Week: Doxing

Looking to impress family and friends this weekend? Work this word into your casual conversations. You will be the hit of every party.

The word of the week = Doxing (also spelled doxxing).

Definition = The practice of researching and broadcasting private or personally identifiable information about an individual or organization.

Does this matter? Actually VERY MUCH SO. Not much is private on the Internet, but when people or organizations want to stay anonymous, it’s usually for a reason.

Doxing exposes information that shouldn’t be exposed, and it can lead to embarrassment or worse.

Don’t believe us? Read this from the Virginia Ass’n of Police: http://www.vachiefs.org/index.php/news/item/doxxing_the_new_threat_posting_personal_info_of_officers_and_their_families

TIP: Remember that nothing on the net is truly anonymous. And help teenagers in your life understand this principle early. It will help avoid potentially harmful situations later.
