“Honesty” Apps: Free Expression or Harassment Tool?

Reminder: The purpose of this site is not to spread fear or Chicken-Little-Esque fear.

This time, however, we feel like we need to speak up.

Parents – this is not the first time apps like these have surfaced, and it won’t be the last.

“Honesty” apps are designed to be direct-feedback rating mechanisms. Many youth (and a few adults we know) feel the need, for some gruesome reason, to know what people actually think about them. While these apps seem like a decent way to get feedback, in reality, these are potentially catastrophic to self-image and self-worth.

  • These apps remind us that the best way to help a teen through the teen years is to create a home environment that prizes open communication. Parents, talk to your children. Ask them about apps like these, and if they use apps like these consider helping them responsibly, or help them walk away.
