It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Gift Card Season
Gift cards are awesome, especially for people like me. I hate shopping. Anything that can help me speed up the process and ameliorate guilt is great, as far as I’m concerned.
That’s all. Thanks for reading our Advertisement for the Gift Card Cartel.
JUST KIDDING. This is a security site. And, this is the time of year when a whole bunch of gift cards get purchased, received, and used. So, a warning.
Enterprising bad guys like gift cards as much as we all do. As this news story from last year shows, thieves have been using gift cards as personal ATMs, and they’re getting better and better at it over time.
The threats and issues aren’t enough to stop us from buying cards, but I did want to make sure that during this holiday season you’ll shop with eyes wide open.
- Try to buy cards from vendors where the cards are locked up or are in a protected area.
- Examine the package. You might not be able to spot every issue, but many times a cursory check will be enough to see if something has been tampered with.
- Keep every receipt. Whether you’re the giver or the receiver. It may help you should you need to escalate with the vendor’s customer service team.
Last thing: If you purchase an online gift card, you won’t have the same sort of physical issues, but you’re still going to want to keep your receipt from that purchase, just in case there are any problems with your present.
Stay safe out there. Hope your holiday isn’t tainted by fraud.
