Happy New Year. Here’s Two Vulnerabilities That Affect Most Computers.
Wow. Great start to the security year. Here’s a (sorta technical) story about two recently discovered vulnerabilities. Called “Meltdown” and “Spectre,” these affect the microprocessors in almost all of the world’s computers. Nice.
This is actually a huge story, and one that will affect society for a while. It’s at least the second time in less than 3 months where global tech vulnerabilities have been exposed (see our entry on Krack for details on the other one).
It’s a troubling trend.
But please, as always, don’t panic. Don’t throw away all of your computing devices yet. Don’t vow to return to a pre-industrial-revolution lifestyle.
You get the point.
These are huge issues, but there are a lot of smart people and wealthy corporations who will be working feverishly to minimize damage. Hackers will probably exploit these holes – but they’re going to do that anyway.
These global issues are scary. But fear isn’t productive. Want to do something? Please, when your device manufacturer issues a patch, patch. Keep your devices up to date.
‘Bout all most of us can do at this point.
Stay safe out there. Hopefully Krack, Meltdown, and Spectre free.
