Meltdown and Spectre Update: How Patching May Affect Performance
Let’s get one thing clear: the cure is going to hurt. But like a vaccine, the cure is better than the full disease.
Meltdown and Spectre are ugly, and they’re not going away any time soon.
(As an aside, Intel is not having a great start to the year. 2nd huge story in the first 12 days of the year. They’ll fix things, but it’s been a brutal January for them.)
Back to Meltdown and Spectre: If you’re interested in finding out how patching will affect performance, here’s a good Ars Technica article.
The short version: Meltdown is going to be (probably, mostly) taken care of through patches. Spectre is more complicated. There will be fixes through patches, but it’s the more complex hole, and there is a really good chance that Spectre patches, even more than Meltdown patches, will affect performance.
All that being said, please keep your system up to date. A performance hit is better than a complete meltdown (no pun intended, promise).
